act-vastu-puja-bhumi-pujaDefinition
The foundation/groundbreaking worship rite, held in the site's NORTHEAST quadrant, at its center, or at a spot that is particularly alluring or markedly powerful. Its threefold purpose is to (1) 'AWAKEN the Five Great Elements that make up the site', (2) accentuate the positive and diminish the negative tendencies of the TEN DIRECTIONS by reiterating their natural alignments, and (3) reduce or eliminate undesirable subtle energies, particularly those deposited by previous residents. Procedures vary widely; one may follow Vāstu tradition or improvise per one's own religious affiliation, invoking (at maximum) guru/mentor, personal & family & local deities, the Nine Planets, the Ten Directions, the Vāstu Puruṣa, ancestors, and the Five Great Elements — or, at minimum, perform a simple ritual for the Five Elements. Mantras (words of power) may be included: 'Vāstu is nāmarūpa' (name-and-form), so right words help the building take form. Includes binding down Śeṣa/Ananta by pegging the residue-spot as the microcosmic center. [TRADITIONAL — Vāstu construction-rite tradition, transmitted by Svoboda].
Traditional
Prāṇa relevance
Indirect. By 'awakening the Five Great Elements' (which carry and respond to prāṇa, per ch.3) and ordering the Ten Directions, the rite is held to set the site's energetic baseline before construction. Not a closed prāṇa-chain; the prāṇa payload is at first-entrance (gṛha-praveśa), where prāṇa is said to ARRIVE.

- Svoboda: the construction rites 'should be performed when facing N, NE, or E' and the gratitude/intention is best expressed 'at astrologically opportune moments (see Appendix Three)'; one's astrological advisor selects an auspicious moment even for signing the purchase (pp.290-291). The rite is scheduled by an auspicious muhurta/electional moment.

Other attributes
- Physiological Aspect
- Not bodily; a consecration/intention rite. The builder's stated intention (stewardship of the site) is the active element; rituals 'restate and reinforce' it, symbolically replacing chaotic/uncivilized residual energy with active respect, inviting the cosmos's constituents into the resident's life in sukha-promoting ways — best done at astrologically opportune moments (Appendix Three).
- Typical Zone
- site's northeast quadrant / center / a powerful spot; performed facing N, NE, or E (to harness sattvic, charitable, growth-promoting directional energies)
