Definition

A martial house of prowess and basic vital energy — brothers, friends and companions; how one acts within a group of equals; the impulse, courage, passion, will and ambition that drive a person. Frawley flags it as one of the two houses (with the 11th) where the Vedic reading DEPARTS most from the Western, which makes the 3rd the rational/informational mind; in the Vedic system that mental side appears only under its "curiosity" aspect.

Prāṇa relevance

The 3rd shows "our basic energy in life — the impulse and intention that drive us" and is grouped (with the 4th & 5th) as the lower-self triad representing our "vital energy" (book p.145). This is energy-as-drive (rajas), not the physiological prana; no breath/vayu link is drawn. Not yet traced to subtle prana.
