Definition

The "infamous" house of death — destruction, dishonor, severe chronic disease or injury leading to death, and loss. Also the deep, mysterious house of transformation: longevity (span of life), the occult, Tantric Yoga, profound research/invention, mathematics, philosophy, and piercing genius; plus inheritance, legacy, and the dark/underworld side of life. The worst house for planets to occupy.
Traditional

Prāṇa relevance

The 8th is the longevity/death house — it "indicates our span of life... and also indicates the factors that tend to keep us alive" (book p.150). Together with the 1st (vitality) and the 3rd (its bhavat-bhavam partner, 8th-from-8th) it sets longevity — the duration of embodied prana. A vitality/longevity node; subtle prana not named, but the most life-span-relevant house.
