House-deity by area remainder (mod 8)

cal-grhadevata-area-remainder

Definition

Commentary-reported procedure: divide the site's area by 8; the remainder names one of eight house-deities (0 = Rikta 'empty', 1 = Dhvaja 'banner', ...), each with its own asterism, used with the Moon's and the doors' asterisms to time and judge construction. Circumference computations in the same excursus take pi = 3.

Recovery Note
Only Rikta (0) and Dhvaja (1) are legible in our copy; the remaining six names and the asterism table are garbled — recover from print (Q10). Likely ancestor of the later ayadi-shadvarga family — comparison flagged for Phase 2 [SPECULATIVE].
Source Layer Note
Commentary-only; Utpala reports it from 'other writers' explicitly contrasted with Varahamihira's general treatment.
