The chakra system explains planetary exaltation
rul-chakra-exaltation-rationalePrāṇa relevance
Exaltation reflects how a planet functions 'once their energy is integrated properly into our lower nature' — i.e. once it is seated correctly in the prana-body (the chakras). The exaltation map is therefore a map of integrated prana-function, distinct from the rulership map of mental function. [MODERN — Frawley.]

- Statement
- The sign↔chakra relationship explains WHY planets are exalted in particular signs — a rationale Frawley calls 'one of the great mysteries of astrology'. Each planet is exalted in the sign whose chakra-position calls for that planet's integrated function: Jupiter↑Cancer (third eye — maximum aspiration), Mercury↑Virgo (throat — expression/speech, its own sign), Moon↑Taurus (heart — receptivity), Saturn↑Libra (heart — detachment), Sun↑Aries (navel — solar energy meets vital will), Venus↑Pisces (sex — love meets creative energy), Mars↑Capricorn (root — fire energy at the outermost level). Exaltation is a 'center-oriented' symbolism (function in the vital / lower astral), whereas ordinary sign-rulership is 'top-oriented' (function in the mental / higher astral).

- exaltation sign of a planet = the sign at the chakra where that planet's energy must be integrated into the lower nature; integration sequence given by Frawley (book p.232)
- Caveats
- Numerology cross-check (book p.232): on the lunar side Jupiter=5, Moon=2, Sun=1, Venus=6; on the solar side Mercury=4, Saturn=7, Mars=3; each side totals 14. From the cycle Frawley INFERS secondary good placements: Jupiter also in Gemini, Mercury in Leo, Saturn in Scorpio, Venus in Aquarius, Mars in Sagittarius (these are Frawley's extrapolations, not classical exaltations).
