- The four 'dark' temples (Vritta, Catushkona, Shodashashri, Ashtashri) admit no external light; their gem-made idol illumines the interior. Per Utpala: build close perimeter walls with high openings that appear to rise from the structure; outer gate in the west; worshippers enter west, circle north to the east, and enter the sanctum by an eastern door.
