Statement

Every planetary faculty has a higher (spiritual / truth-ward) and a lower (egoic / outward / sense-ward) expression, and the psychological work is to turn each from its lower to its higher pole. The paradigm case is the Sun (higher = the Divine Self / Atma; lower = the ego / self-image) and Mercury (the same judgement-faculty is either a 'net of information and speculation that traps the soul in the realm of the senses' or 'a ladder of values and principles through which the soul can ascend'). The general principle: intelligence/reason can be directed toward outer information (lower) or inner truth (higher); emotion/feeling toward outer needs (lower) or the Divine significance of each moment (higher).

Caveats

⚑ Frawley names buddhi (Mercury) as a 'higher level' rational process to be raised, yet in classical Samkhya buddhi already IS the higher intellect (mahat) above manas. His 'higher/lower mind' split does not map cleanly onto the manas(lower)/buddhi(higher) antahkarana hierarchy — flagged as a question.
