House classification by quality (kendra / trikona / dusthana / upachaya / panapara / apoklima)
rul-kendra-trikona-dusthana-doctrinePrāṇa relevance
The classification decides where planetary force lands — and the dusthanas (6·8·12) are precisely the disease/death/loss houses that govern the body's vital state, while the trines (1·5·9, incl. the body & the disease-negating 5th) and the 6th/8th set vitality and longevity. So the strength-classification is the lens through which the chart's bodily-vitality (prana-relevant) houses are weighted. Gross level.

- Statement
- The twelve houses are classified by strength and quality, paralleling the sign qualities. ANGULAR / Kendra (quadrant) = houses 1·4·7·10 (sharp, energetic, decisive; planets here are strong; strength order 10>7>4>1; the 10th overpowers the Ascendant; their character mirrors Cardinal signs). SUCCEDENT / Panapara = 2·5·8·11 (moderate strength; accumulation/stability; mirror Fixed signs; order 5>11>2>8). CADENT / Apoklima = 3·6·9·12 (weak/uncertain/hidden action; mental sensitivity & adaptability; mirror Mutable signs; better for spiritual life; order 9>3>6>12). TRINE / Trikona = 1·5·9 (a triangle from the Ascendant; a source of strength; Jupiter and the Moon do well; the 9th, though cadent, is the best trine, the 5th the best succedent; their lords are very auspicious). UPACHAYA / "increasing" = 3·6·10·11 (planets strengthen through time; malefics — Sun, Saturn, Mars, the Nodes — do well; the 10th & 11th best; but the lords of upachayas except the 10th are inauspicious). APACHAYA / "decrease" = 1·2·4·7·8 (planets lose strength with time; malefics do poorly; the 8th worst). DUSTHANA / difficult = 6·8·12 (planets weakened, can cause disease/injury/loss/sorrow; transition points around the 7th and above the Ascendant).

- TRADITIONAL
- Conditions
- house strength is read jointly with the sign quality occupying it (Cardinal+angular reinforce, Mutable+cadent reinforce, Fixed+succedent reinforce — book p.143); also applied to houses counted from the Moon
- Exceptions
- a balance of planets across angular/trine, succedent and cadent gives more sattva/harmony than a concentration in any one (book p.143); the 9th (cadent) and 5th (succedent) are boosted by being trines; the 10th upachaya-lord is uniquely not inauspicious
