Kuja Dosha ('Mars affliction') is constituted by Mars: Mars in the 1st/4th/7th/8th/12th house afflicts marriage and the spouse. The rule is named for and driven by Mars (Kuja = Mars). Edge records that this representative yoga/dosha is a Mars-combination.

Statement
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house creates difficulties for harmony in marriage and the life of the spouse ('very much stressed in Hindu astrology'). Exceptions cancel it: 1st in Aries, 4th in Scorpio, 7th in Capricorn or Pisces, 8th in Cancer, 12th in Sagittarius. The 7th is most difficult, then the 1st and 8th. Each placement reads differently (1st → aggression; 7th → conflict/domination; 8th → strong sexual drive or early death of partner; 4th → aggressive subconscious; 12th → hidden passion / wasting of vital energy). A person with Kuja Dosha should generally marry another with a similar placement. A strong Mars in a woman's chart is (from the Hindu point of view) difficult for marriage.

Modern Framing Note
[MODERN — Frawley] relativizes for modernity: the rule 'reflect[s] a more passive role for women… may not be so applicable in the modern world where the woman has to work and may therefore need a stronger Mars'; for a modern woman it may only mean an independent marriage / her own career / perhaps no children. He cautions against simplistic reading (many charts have it to some degree) and requires corroboration by other afflictions to the 7th, its lord, and the significator.
