Elemental classification of the planets (and Frawley's modification)

Prāṇa relevance

Each graha's element is the first link from planet to the five mahabhutas and thence (via the doshas) to the body — the core of this project's prana axis. The Mercury/Saturn divergence is therefore a flagged uncertainty in that chain.

Statement
The 'traditional association of elements and planets in Vedic astrology': ETHER — Jupiter; AIR — Saturn and Rahu; WATER — Moon and Venus; EARTH — Mercury; FIRE — Sun, Mars and Ketu. Each planet also has a secondary element, and several different but related elemental systems coexist because a planet's element is not entirely fixed (depends on location, aspects, rulerships). Frawley states a personal MODIFICATION: make Saturn rule earth and Mercury rule air.

Note
Frawley explicitly modifies the traditional table for Mercury and Saturn — the two divergence points. The element table is the constitutive (own-element) scheme, distinct from the graha→direction governance scheme of Book 1's dir- entities.
