The doctrine is the operational bridge from a planet's chart-condition to the person's subtle and bodily state — strengthening/warding a graha to rebalance the constitution (the dosha/vitality the Medical theme maps). Mantra and yantra act on the 'subtle environment'; gems/herbs on the gross. The body↔cosmos remedial loop, kept at the practical-technology level (Frawley calls it a 'spiritual/occult technology'); subtle prana not made explicit.

Statement: Vedic astrology balances a chart's planetary influences by practical means — gems, colors, herbs, mantras, yantras, deities, ritual and meditation. The first principle: a planet should generally be strengthened IF it is WEAK — but a natural malefic (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu), even when weak, should be strengthened only with caution, and best together with a friendly benefic; benefics are safe to strengthen. Strength/weakness and benefic/malefic nature are judged both naturally and temporally (by house rulership from the Ascendant). Substances (gems, herbs) are riskier than mantra/meditation; mantra, meditation, yantra and propitiation can be used by everyone and are also used to WARD OFF an over-strong/afflicting planet (which one must NOT strengthen with gems/herbs). Gems must be flawless and must be purified/energized with mantra; they can strengthen either the higher or the lower powers of a planet depending on intention.

Caveats: gems/herbs > mantra/meditation in risk; a gem used on a low level (e.g. Venus → mere pleasure/attachment) needs spiritual intention to raise it; variant opinions exist among Vedic astrologers, esp. on gems
