Statement

Beyond the birth chart (Rashi Chakra / harmonic first), Vedic astrology derives subordinate HARMONIC (divisional, varga) charts by subdividing each sign and counting the subdivisions off by SIGN (not by degree-multiplication as in Western harmonics). The full set of sixteen is the Shodashavarga; nested subsets are Shadvarga (6: D1, D2, D3, D9, D12, D30), Saptavarga (+D7), Dashavarga (+D10, D16, D60). Each varga is used mainly to gauge a planet's strength (own-sign/exaltation/friend vs enemy/fall, judged by the same friendship rules) and focuses on a life-domain. A planet in the SAME sign in D1 and D9 is Vargottama ('in the best subdivision'), giving strength for good or ill.
