Vata (Air humor)
वातvāta
also: vata-dosha, air-humor, wind-humor
dos-vataDefinition
The Air biological humor, vata = 'what blows' (the wind). Frawley's first of three humors: it governs all movement in the body, guides the nervous system, discharges impulses, and as the directing force moves the other two humors. Predominant in the Air (Vata) constitutional type.
Traditional
Prāṇa relevance
Vata is the bodily wind that moves everything — the gross-body analogue of prana-as-mover. Frawley's 'directing force [that] moves the other humors' echoes prana's role, but he keeps it at the dosha (gross humor) level and does not equate it with the subtle vayus or vital prana. The gross↔subtle bridge is the open question of this whole theme (parallels Book-1 Q6).

⚑ Certain SITE features generate excess vāta in the residents by over-exciting prāṇa's mobility: busy intersections / crossroads ('crossroads energy is so potently transient that it overexcites the quality of mobility in the prāṇa'), dead-end streets (prāṇa stagnates yet 'plenty of vāta energy pools in the residence'), and a vīthi-śūla road-spear. The result 'destabilizes everything and everyone who lives in such a residence'.Space ManifestationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
⚑ A SPACE can be vāta in quality: the Dry Pattern — dry, cold, light, unstable, clear, rough, subtle. 'Live in a dry space long enough and the Dry Pattern of vāta will eventually increase sufficiently to throw the body out of balance.' Arid climates / heating that dries the air → a vāta space that dries out the resident's body ('like increases like').Connections (20)

- Frawley equates Vata with the Air element: 'the biological Air humor is called Vata, which means literally what blows, the wind' (book p.211).
- Svoboda's explicit pancabhuta composition: 'Vata arises from Air and Space.' Vata is the 'joint' generated where the Air and Space elements meet (the doshas are 'joints' at points where two of the five elements interact, PDF p.065). This edge records the Air constituent.
- Second half of Svoboda's vata composition 'Vata arises from Air and Space' — the Space/akasha constituent. This is the constituent Frawley omitted; it is also the prana-and-awareness-bearing element (PDF p.074).

- Parashari 3.24 gives the Moon a dual constitution: watery AND airy = kapha AND vata; the vata (airy) component is the second dosha edge.
- Parashari 3.28 dual constitution: watery AND airy = kapha AND vata; the vata (airy) component is the second dosha edge.
- Parashari 3.29 (quoted): Saturn 'is airy (vata) in constitution.'
- Parashari 3.30 (quoted): Rahu 'is airy (vata) in constitution.'
- Parashari 3.30 (quoted): 'Ketu is similar to Rahu' — Frawley applies Rahu's vata to Ketu via the 'similar' clause.
- Gemini, an Air sign, leans Vata - derived via element (Air->Vata); no direct sign->dosha table in this chapter (book p.114-115).
- ANOMALY captured: Virgo is an EARTH sign by triplicity, but Frawley's ONE explicit sign->humor statement assigns it Vata - 'Virgo governs Vata (the Air humor) in the body in general' (Medical book p.220), because Virgo governs the digestive system and 'most diseases are of the Air humor and through weak digestion'. This contradicts Virgo's Earth-element/Kapha default.
- Air element = Vata humor (Frawley, book p.211, p.215).
- Saturn is the prototypical Vata planet: Air types are 'dominated and agitated by Saturnian influences'; Saturn rules bones/muscles producing arthritis (a Vata disease); 'Saturn and Rahu are most responsible for Vata disorders' (book p.212, p.215).
- Frawley groups Rahu with Saturn and Mercury as Vata/Air; Air-type clumsiness, ungroundedness and chronic nervous disorders are 'largely due to their susceptibility to Rahu'; 'Saturn and Rahu most responsible for Vata disorders' (book p.213, p.215).
- Frawley groups Mercury with Saturn and Rahu as Vata/Air; Air types 'often have strong Mercury' (book p.212, p.215). Mercury is the benefic/intellectual face of Vata vs Saturn/Rahu's deranging face.
- NW doshic composition: 'Northwest displays a clear vata predominance, for Moon, Saturn, and Mercury all indicate vata' (PDF p.195) - the Moon is the vata-bearing planet of the NW confluence. Mints the planet->dosha edge the NW confluence rests on.
- SW doshic composition: 'the vata that Saturn and Rahu share combines with the pitta of Mars and Ketu' (PDF p.193) - Rahu is a vata-bearing planet of the SW confluence. Mints the planet->dosha edge underlying SW's vata-pitta overabundance.
- SE doshic composition: 'the naturally mild, harmonious, vata-and-kapha energy of southeast-lord Venus' (PDF p.192) - Venus is intrinsically vata-and-kapha, though the SE QUADRANT nets pitta because Sun/Mars outshine Venus. Mints the (intrinsic) Venus->vata edge.
- Svoboda calls Saturn 'a vāta planet' (climate rule). Saturn↔vāta correspondence (dry/cold/light qualities shared).

- An ABRUPT transition from house to garden 'fosters brusqueness, and consequent vāta disturbance and disharmony'; a GENTLE transition (garden room, trellised walk, conservatory, greenery over the building, reusing the house's materials) 'promotes gentility' and vāta-reducing continuity. [MODERN — Svoboda]
- A vīthi-śūla (road-spear: dead-end road, T-stem, or open-angle spear-point pointed at a plot) injects transient, highly mobile road-energy into the site; this 'overexcites the quality of mobility in the prāṇa that flows through nearby houses and their inhabitants', and since vāta is the doṣa of movement/mobility, the over-mobilized prāṇa manifests as an excess of vāta that 'destabilizes everything and everyone who lives in such a residence'. The qualifier is that the spear strikes the building (esp. its heart); a non-striking or NE-side spear is acceptable.

Notes from other books
- txt-svoboda-vastuExtends the ch. 3 'space can be vāta' (dosha-of-space) layer to the SITE scale: it is now a road PATTERN (crossroads / dead-end / spear), via prāṇa-mobility, that raises the resident's vāta. The link site → prāṇa-mobility → vāta is the cleanest site→doṣa→(prāṇa-adjacent) chain in the chapter.
- txt-svoboda-vastuSvoboda's signature move: a SPACE has a vāta quality, and a vāta space increases vāta in its occupant by 'like increases like'. He explicitly inverts the Ayurvedic emphasis — 'While knowing your constitution [prakṛti] is very important in Āyurveda, in Vāstu it is often most important to know your current condition [vikṛti]' (PDF p.060). His vāta = Air+Space composition diverges from Frawley's Air-only and matches classical Ayurveda — surfaced as a question. Vāta is 'mainly related to the nervous system, controls all body movements'; its space-reading is one way to 'read the doṣas of the people in a household just by noting how they arrange their living areas' (PDF p.062).

- Frawley equates Vata with Air simpliciter in this chapter (humor ≈ element). Classical Ayurveda makes Vata = vayu + akasha; that second element is NOT stated here — flagged as a question.
