Definition

The Air biological humor, vata = 'what blows' (the wind). Frawley's first of three humors: it governs all movement in the body, guides the nervous system, discharges impulses, and as the directing force moves the other two humors. Predominant in the Air (Vata) constitutional type.

Prāṇa relevance

Vata is the bodily wind that moves everything — the gross-body analogue of prana-as-mover. Frawley's 'directing force [that] moves the other humors' echoes prana's role, but he keeps it at the dosha (gross humor) level and does not equate it with the subtle vayus or vital prana. The gross↔subtle bridge is the open question of this whole theme (parallels Book-1 Q6).

⚑ Certain SITE features generate excess vāta in the residents by over-exciting prāṇa's mobility: busy intersections / crossroads ('crossroads energy is so potently transient that it overexcites the quality of mobility in the prāṇa'), dead-end streets (prāṇa stagnates yet 'plenty of vāta energy pools in the residence'), and a vīthi-śūla road-spear. The result 'destabilizes everything and everyone who lives in such a residence'.

'Live in a dry space long enough and the Dry Pattern of vāta will eventually increase sufficiently to throw the body out of balance.' Arid climates / heating that dries the air → a vāta space that dries out the resident's body ('like increases like').
