Ether / Space (Akasha)

आकाशākāśa

also: ether, space, kha

ele-akasha

Definition

The space/ether mahabhuta — the most subtle element, the field in which the others arise. NOT used by Frawley in this medical-astrology chapter (his working scheme is Air/Fire/Water + Earth, four elements, with no fifth ether term). Minted as a stub for completeness of the pancabhuta set; its tanmatra/sense fields are standard Samkhya doctrine, not from this chapter.

Cross-book attributes (7) — fill / concur / diverge

Body LocationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
the vacant spaces in the body are chiefly Space — interiors of the lungs, heart, intestines, and the ventricles of the brain
Breath PoleFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
⚑ Space/ākāśa is the UNITY pole of the dwelling's respiration: 'the prāṇa moves... from the unity of Space into the multiplicity of Earth, and back again' (PDF p.104). Space is 'matter in its most rarefied form, [it] offers prakṛti a path through which it can move in the direction of reuniting with puruṣa' (PDF p.095) — the inward/return (contraction) channel.
Guna RankingFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
'Space is the most sattvic element, the most conducive for equilibrium' — yet paradoxically also 'promotes tamas substantially, by being less receptive to our efforts to change it than are the other Elements'
Prana RelationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
'Like the other four Elements, [Space] carries prāṇa, and responds to prāṇa; and where there is prāṇa, there is awareness' — Space is the prāṇa-bearing/awareness-bearing field.
Space ManifestationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
⚑ Space/ākāśa in space = 'the field from which matter manifests, the arena in which events occur'; in a dwelling it is the empty/conscious extent itself, 'the vacant spaces in the body' and of a room. 'Space gives you either the bliss of an unobstructed body and the illumination of a silent mind, or it can generate the ache of hollowness, depending on your condition.' Get-to-know-Space: gazing at the stars, chanting, singing, listening to uplifting music.
Svarodaya ShapeFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
a pattern of small dots — conveys presence with negligible actual form (Svarodaya breath-shape for the formless element)
Vastu IdentityFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
⚑ 'In a very fundamental sense, ākāśa is Vāstu; or, more precisely, Vāstu is ākāśa.' Space is alive, carries prāṇa, responds to prāṇa; the word ākāśa derives from a root 'to shine' (Reality shines through Space as awareness). The akashic record = events' traces on the ākāśa of a location (not a 'library').

Connections (6)

composed-of · 1
  • Second half of Svoboda's vata composition 'Vata arises from Air and Space' — the Space/akasha constituent. This is the constituent Frawley omitted; it is also the prana-and-awareness-bearing element (PDF p.074).
corresponds-to · 5
  • Svoboda: akasha 'carries prana, and responds to prana; and where there is prana, there is awareness' (PDF p.074); the word akasha derives from a root 'to shine', Reality shining through Space as awareness. Space is the living, prana-bearing, awareness-bearing field — and 'Vastu is akasha', so the prana-bearing field IS the medium of Vastu.
  • Jupiter (Brihaspati)Traditional
Frawley: Jupiter 'by its spiritual nature, is said to represent ether'; also water ('a heavy and liquid planet', esp. in four-element systems); 'said by some to rule over air... not so much the element it possesses as the one it controls.' Primary constitutive element = ether/akasha.
  • The Vishuddha (throat center) corresponds to ether/space (akasha) — the standard tantric mahabhuta of the fifth chakra. Supplied as the standard series, not from Frawley's chapter, which warns its element-rulership diverges (book p.234).
  • SattvaModern
Svoboda: 'Space is the most sattvic element, the most conducive for equilibrium' (PDF p.079). Among the five Great Elements, akasha is ranked the most sattvic — the element most aligned with the equilibrium-guna; the sattva storehouse (meditation space) is the most sattvic, akasha-dominant region.
  • dir-nairrtyaModern
Svoboda's element-scheme leaves the SW UNRESOLVED between Space (Akasha) and Earth ('authorities disagree'); the SW reflects BOTH Earth (kapha) and Space (vata). This edge records the Space-half of the disputed SW assignment.

Notes from other books

  • txt-svoboda-vastuHEADLINE FILL: ele-akasha was a near-empty STUB in Frawley's medical theme ('NOT used by Frawley... by ABSENCE'). Svoboda makes ākāśa the CENTRE of Vāstu ('Vāstu is ākāśa'), the living prāṇa-bearing field — the single most on-thesis datum in the chapter. Per PDF p.065, vāta is composed of Air + Space (ākāśa is a constituent of vāta), which is also the classical Ayurveda vāta composition Frawley did NOT state. The ākāśa↔prāṇa↔awareness identification is the prana spine of Book 3; promoted to a connection (below).
  • txt-svoboda-vastuAdds the breath/respiration role to the dwelling-faced ele-akasha the pilot established ('Vāstu is ākāśa', the prāṇa-bearing field). Here ākāśa is specifically the UNITY/return pole of the expansion-contraction pulse; Vāstu 'focuses most intently on the elements of Earth... and Space' (PDF p.095) precisely because they bound the respiration's two ends. New field only.
