Time as the Divine Breath (the science of time; breath↔time↔Sun)

pra-time-as-divine-breath

Definition

Frawley's "science of time": Time is the original power ruling the universe, the "Divine breath that creates, sustains and destroys" cosmic life and form; Time is the great God Mahakala (= Shiva/Mahadeva) and Mahakali (the Goddess/ Shakti). The planets are the channels that direct the energy of time through the solar system. Crucially, Frawley anchors the breath↔time↔Sun link in the Maitri (Maitriyani) Upanishad VI.1: "The Self carries himself twofold, as the life-force (Prana) and as the Sun … by the movement of the outer Self [the Sun] the movement of the inner Self [Prana/breath] is measured" — and inversely for the Knower. The ancient seers used the Sun's movement to understand the breath/life-force in the body (basis of Yoga), and by meditating on the breath came to understand the Sun's movement.

Prāṇa relevance

⚑ THE prana node of this theme. Frawley's "science of time" makes the human BREATH (Prana) the inner counterpart of cosmic/solar time — "by the movement of the outer Self [Sun] the movement of the inner Self [Prana] is measured" [CLASSICAL — Maitri Upanishad VI.1, via Frawley]. This is a doctrinal, reciprocal breath↔time identification — STRONGER than the Brihat Samhita's tmp-prana, which makes prana=one-breath the base time-UNIT but (per Book-1 Q38) does NOT assert that the time-prana IS the vital/bodily prana. Frawley's quoted Upanishad DOES assert the breath↔Sun (inner↔outer Self) identity. I do NOT merge this into tmp-prana and do NOT resolve whether it settles Q38 — I cross- reference tmp-prana, mint this as Frawley's distinct (Upanishad-grounded) concept, and FLAG it as a second witness to the breath-as-time-measure doctrine (see question).

  • Frawley's 'science of time' (grounded in Maitri Upanishad VI.1) makes the human BREATH (Prana) the inner counterpart of cosmic/solar time: 'by the movement of the outer Self [Sun] the movement of the inner Self [Prana/breath] is measured.' This ECHOES the Brihat Samhita's tmp-prana, where prana = the duration of one breath = the base human-scaled unit of the entire jyotisha time-system (cosmic time literally counted in human breaths). The file deliberately CROSS-REFERENCES rather than merges: Frawley's Upanishad-grounded version asserts a reciprocal breath<->Sun (inner<->outer Self) IDENTITY, which is doctrinally STRONGER than tmp-prana's bare time-UNIT use (Book-1 Q38 records that BS does not assert the time-prana IS the vital/bodily prana). This edge records the resonance, NOT a resolution.

  • Frawley anchors the breath<->time<->Sun reciprocal-measure doctrine of his 'science of time' explicitly in Maitri (Maitrayaniya) Upanishad VI.1, which he quotes verbatim: the Self is twofold as Prana (inner Self) and Sun (outer Self), each measuring the other. The concept entity is doctrinally derived from this located root verse, Frawley the conduit.
  • Atharva VedaClassical
Frawley opens his 'science of time' with the Atharva Veda Hymn to Time (XIX.23.1-4): Time as a seven-rayed horse whom the seers mount, whose wheels are all the worlds, who moves as the first of the Gods. The Time-as-Divine-breath concept is anchored on this located root hymn, Frawley the conduit.
influences · 1
  • The science-of-time doctrine (Time as the original ruling power; the planets as the Gods/channels of time; the quality-of-the-moment / synchronicity principle) is the conceptual PARENT of the breath<->time node: if Time is the Divine breath and the planets channel it, then the human breath (prana) is the inner pulse of cosmic time. Frawley does not derive the physiology, but this doctrine is the bridge from cosmic time to bodily breath. No more specific §4 type fits (it is doctrine-frames-concept, not derivation from a text nor a homology); justified per the §4 influences rule.

Location In Body
the life-force/breath (Prana) within the body = the 'inner Self'; its movement is mirrored by the Sun's movement = the 'outer Self'
Function
establishes a reciprocal breath↔Sun (inner↔outer Self) measure: outwardly the Sun measures the breath; for the Knower the breath measures the Sun. This is the yogic basis for reading the cosmos in the body and the body in the cosmos.
