Planetary relationships (permanent + temporary + composite)
rul-planetary-relationshipsPrāṇa relevance
Friendship/enmity sets whether two grahas' element/humor influences reinforce or cancel in a chart — the combinatorics behind 'which humor dominates the constitution' (the Medical theme's rul-constitution-determination-astro relies on relative planetary strength). Not directly a prana physiology.

- Statement
- A planet's strength in a sign depends on its relationship with that sign's ruler. PERMANENT (natural) relationships split the seven planets into two broad friendly groups — {Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter} (rulers of Fire & Water signs) and {Mercury, Venus, Saturn} (rulers of Air & Earth signs) — members of one group usually inimical to the other, with specific exceptions (the Moon is enemy to none; Sun↔Mercury are asymmetric neutrals/friends since always close). TEMPORARY relationships are positional: planets in the 2nd,3rd,4th,10th,11th,12th from a planet (counting its sign as 1st) are its temporary FRIENDS; those in the same sign or the 5th–9th are temporary ENEMIES. COMPOSITE combines them: Perm.Friend+Temp.Friend=Best Friend; Perm.Friend+ Temp.Enemy=Neutral; Perm.Neutral+Temp.Friend=Friend; Perm.Neutral+Temp.Enemy=Enemy; Perm.Enemy+ Temp.Enemy=Great Enemy. (Nodes: Rahu/Ketu sometimes given Saturn-like relations, or the dispositor's; many astrologers ignore node relationships as non-primary.)

- Conditions
- the rationale Frawley gives: planets are harmonious to those ruling signs of the SAME element (book p.128); temporary friendship = being in the quarter-zodiac preceding or succeeding a planet (near but not on top of it); enmity = too close (same sign) or too far
