Definition

The most common Vedic system of planetary periods (dashas): a 120-year life-cycle in which each of the seven major grahas plus the two lunar nodes rules a major period (Maha Dasha) of a fixed length — Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20 years (= 120). The periods run in this fixed cyclical order, which Frawley states is THE SAME as the order of rulership of the 27 nakshatras (the periods 'are based upon them'). The starting Maha-Dasha and its elapsed/remaining fraction are fixed by the longitude of the natal Moon within its nakshatra. Each Maha Dasha subdivides into Minor (Bhukti), Subminor (Antar), Subsubminor (Sukshma), each in the same 9-lord order and proportional lengths.

Prāṇa relevance

The dasha system is the time-axis through which planetary influence is metered across a life — Frawley extends it past death ('periods coming after death help determine the after-life state… the sojourn in the astral plane', book p.200) and ties junctions to gem/mantra remediation of body and fortune. A faint vitality thread (difficult periods 'limit our lifespan'); no breath/prana physiology is drawn. The deeper tie to tmp-prana (BS's breath-as-time-atom) is a candidate synthesis node, flagged not asserted. prana_relevance: largely not yet traced.

  • Frawley states the Vimshottari dasha order is THE SAME as the order of rulership of the lunar constellations, 'as the periods are based upon them' (book p.197). The 9 dasha-lords cycle in the nakshatra-rulership sequence, and the starting Maha Dasha at birth is the lord of the nakshatra the natal Moon occupies. This edge records that the dasha system is DERIVED FROM the nakshatra-rulership structure.

Other attributes

Cycle
a 120-year life-cycle subdivided by 9 graha period-lords; nested levels Maha→Bhukti→Antar→Sukshma
Period Lords And Lengths
{"sun":"6 years","moon":"10 years","mars":"7 years","rahu":"18 years","jupiter":"16 years","saturn":"19 years","mercury":"17 years","ketu":"7 years","venus":"20 years","total":"120 years"}
Cyclical Order
Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus → (repeat). This is the SAME order as the nakshatra-rulership sequence; the dasha running at birth is the lord of the nakshatra the natal Moon occupies.
Ascending Length Order
Sun 6 < Ketu 7 = Mars 7 < Moon 10 < Jupiter 16 < Mercury 17 < Rahu 18 < Saturn 19 < Venus 20 (Frawley notes 16+17+18+19+20=90 and 6+7+7+10=30; 'no specific rationale is given for these amounts' — book p.197–198)
Auspicious Values
Period-junctions (esp. Maha & Bhukti starts) are the time to BALANCE the lord's influence; a Maha Dasha of a benefic, beginning, is particularly auspicious (its first Bhukti/Antar/Sukshma are ruled by it too). The most favourable times = all of Maha/Minor/Subminor lords benefic and different planets.
Nakshatra Mapping Note
⚑ The full 27-nakshatra → starting-dasha-lord TABLE is referenced by Frawley as 'see table on p.133' — OUTSIDE this theme's page range (pp.167–208). The MECHANISM is captured: starting lord = lord of the Moon's natal nakshatra; remaining fraction of the first Maha = (minutes left in the nakshatra ÷ 800) × the lord's period in years. The ONE worked nakshatra→lord datum given inline: Moon in Hasta → ruled by the Moon → Moon Maha Dasha (book p.198). The full 27-row table is deferred to the Signs/Nakshatra theme or a p.133 pass (flagged as a question).
Subdivision Levels
Maha Dasha (major, 6–20 yrs, avg 13). Bhukti/Minor (8 mo–2 yr 3 mo, avg 1.5 yr). Antar/Subminor (1–3 mo, avg 60 days). Sukshma/Subsubminor (3–10 days, avg ~1 week). Each level uses the same 9-lord order, proportioned to lord lengths.
Remedial Note
At period-junctions, balance the lord via gems (to strengthen a benefic-but-weak lord), or mantra/ritual/worship (to propitiate a malefic lord), or by strengthening the benefic ruling-period lord — e.g. propitiate a starting negative Saturn-Bhukti, or strengthen the containing positive Jupiter-Maha (book p.203).
