Jyotisha as a science of cosmic-and-self knowledge (astrology as spiritual science)

Prāṇa relevance

This is the book's thesis-frame: astrology as a tool for moving consciousness from the body-bound point through the rays of creation to the cosmic Self — the master body↔cosmos↔Self axis the whole project orbits. It is consciousness/ soul-level, not subtle-prana physiology; prana enters only via the breath↔Sun (pra-time-as-divine-breath) and the Yoga of "balancing the solar and lunar forces within the body" Frawley mentions (book p.21). Conceptual, not traced as a pranic mechanism.

  • The thesis-frame (astrology as a spiritual science / part of Atma Vidya) is built ON the cosmic-person homology: the planets are 'the portions of the Cosmic Man who we are that we must put back together'; the chart mirrors the soul; spiritual realization is reintegrating the dispersed planetary rays within the heart. The doctrine deploys the macrocosm<->microcosm (Purusha) concept as its operative mechanism. No more specific §4 type fits (doctrine-deploys-concept); influences per the §4 rule.
  • The four-aims doctrine subordinates Kama/Artha/Dharma to Moksha as the primary goal, which is exactly the spiritual-science orientation of jyotisha: Vedic astrology serves all four aims but subordinates the lower three to Moksha. The four-aims value-scheme orients and motivates the spiritual-science thesis (and warns that the lower goals routinely capture astrology). It frames the purpose of the cosmic-self-knowledge doctrine. influences per the §4 rule (value-scheme-orients-doctrine).

Statement
Astrology (Jyotisha, "the science of light") is, on its highest level, not fortune-telling but a spiritual science — part of the science of the Self (Atma Vidya) and the practice of Yoga. Its purpose is to guide consciousness beyond the net of outer (planetary) forces to their source in the Self. The birth chart mirrors the soul and its incarnation; the planets are the cosmic rays/energies we must master and reintegrate within the Self ("the portions of the Cosmic Man … that we must put back together"). The stars are alive within us as our guiding lights — "the outer comes from the inner and not vice-versa, though the outer can affect the inner". Self-knowledge is the basis of all knowledge; Vedic astrology aims at the practitioner's own direct knowing, not at imposing external authority.

Conditions
the spiritual use requires the practitioner's own self-knowledge; without it the astrologer merely imposes ego-judgements (book p.40)
Exceptions
Frawley concedes astrology 'as it is commonly practiced is not spiritual … full of illusion, a thing of maya'; making it a spiritual science 'is to take it beyond its natural scope and normal limit' and requires complete integrity, objectivity and awareness (book p.37). Also: 'only the ignorant are entirely subject to their birth chart … the wise are not concerned about it.'
