Principle / Ruledraft· Frawley — Astrology of the Seers
Signs by quality (Chara/Sthira/Dvisvabhava) and the guna mapping
rul-signs-by-qualityPrāṇa relevance
The modality↔guna mapping is the chart's tie to the Samkhya guna axis (the Medical theme left the gunas as stubs; this is where Frawley actually uses them). Gunas govern the mind's state, a prana-adjacent (mental-prana) axis — but Frawley applies them to character/quality, not to bodily prana. The internal divergence is captured, not resolved.

- Frawley maps the Cardinal (Chara) modality to the guna Rajas ('the principle of movement, gives impulse, direction, expression', book p.110). NB this is Frawley's primary mapping; he himself reports 'some Vedic astrologers' invert the Fixed/Mutable pair (Fixed->Sattva, Mutable->Tamas, book p.111) - captured as rul-signs-by-quality.has_internal_divergence:true, NOT as a contradicts edge.

- Statement
- Each sign is one of three qualities (modalities): Chara ('active', Cardinal — the positive, dynamic, initiating phase of its element), Sthira ('immovable', Fixed — the static, stable, enduring phase), or Dvisvabhava ('both-natured', Mutable — the transitional, malleable, refined phase). The four Cardinal signs are Aries/Cancer/Libra/Capricorn; the four Fixed are Taurus/Leo/Scorpio/Aquarius; the four Mutable are Gemini/Virgo/Sagittarius/Pisces. Frawley maps Cardinal→Rajas, Fixed→Tamas, Mutable→Sattva — and also relates the qualities to elements: Cardinal≈fire (energizing), Fixed≈water (stabilizing), Mutable≈air (fluctuating).

- Conditions
- modality predicts how a person directs energy in life; the strongest planet's own quality can override the sign-balance (a Mutable Sun in Gemini gives mutability even amid Fixed signs, book p.112)
