Earth (Prithvi)

पृथ्वीpṛthvī

also: earth, bhumi

ele-prithvi

Definition

The earth mahabhuta — the principle of solidity/mass. Frawley uses Earth only in the 4-element zodiac scheme (Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn) and notes that Ayurveda 'tends to include the Earth under the Water humor' rather than treating it as a separate humor.

Body LocationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
the bones are basically Earthy (the solid pole of the body)
Breath PoleFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
Earth is the MULTIPLICITY pole of the dwelling's respiration (Space→Earth→Space, PDF p.104); 'matter in its most solid form, the ultimate outcome of prakṛti's initial movement away from puruṣa' (PDF p.095) — the outward/expansion terminus.
Guna RankingFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
the most tamasic of the five elements — 'Earth's stability gives it the greatest measure of tamas among the quintet' (most opaque to awareness, hardest-but-easiest-to-stabilize)
Limiting FunctionFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
⚑ Earth is the PARTITIONING / limiting element of Vāstu: 'Only Earth can partition Space into residence and residue.' Vāstu 'focuses most intently' on Earth (the tactile material realm) and Space; Earth applies the boundaries and constraints that finitize an open space into a defined one. (The constraint-side of the growth-vs-limitation axis — see rul-expansion-contraction.)
Space ManifestationFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
Earth in space = everything solid: the ground, the street, walls, mass, the built fabric; felt as stability and weightiness that 'grounds' a body. Get-to-know-Earth: rock climbing, walking barefoot on grass. In a dwelling Earth 'can provide physical and mental firmness and stability in life, or it can hinder and petrify.'
Svarodaya ShapeFilledper txt-svoboda-vastu
square — breath covers the whole 'flat ground' of a mirror when Earth predominates (Svarodaya breath-evaluation)

  • Second half of 'kapha from Water and Earth' (PDF p.065) — the Earth/prithvi constituent, treated by Svoboda as a DISTINCT constituent element of kapha.

  • Mercury (Budha)Traditional
The traditional Hindu table (Frawley's transmission) makes Mercury the earth planet ('said by many to represent the element of earth … basic earthly qualities of objective perception, commerce and communication'). Mutable; also said air/ether.
  • Frawley's own modification: 'make Saturn rule earth' (its attributes 'dark, heavy, gross and coarse... may be said to rule over earth'; strong Saturn 'gives earthly qualities').
  • Taurus is an Earth sign in the four-element triplicity (Earth = Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn) (book p.112-113).
  • The Muladhara (root center) corresponds to earth (prithvi) — the standard tantric mahabhuta of the lowest chakra. Frawley does NOT tabulate a chakra-by-chakra element scheme in this chapter and explicitly warns (book p.234) that his chakra correspondences 'differ slightly from the usual order, particularly in regard to rulership of the elements'; this edge therefore carries the STANDARD tantric series, not Frawley's chapter scheme.
  • Svoboda: 'Square is the shape of Earth, the most stable and reliable of the Five Elements.' The square plan symbolically IS the Earth element — its four equal sides / four ground-points expressing Earth's stability (cf. the four-legged chair).
  • dir-nairrtyaModern
The Earth-half of Svoboda's disputed SW assignment: SW = Space OR Earth ('authorities disagree'); SW reflects Earth (kapha). Svoboda's remedy of placing 'extra Earth' (tall heavy things) in the SW treats it as the Earth quadrant; the center then takes Space.
  • dir-nairrtyaModern
SW confluence: 'Southwest is presided over... by the Earth Element' (PDF p.193); 'the stability that Earth offers makes southwest the perfect location for the master bedroom'. NOTE: here Svoboda commits SW's element to EARTH, where the pilot (p.150) recorded SW as Space-OR-Earth ('authorities disagree') - a within-author value-shift, flagged. The element leg of the SW confluence.

  • Svoboda names Ganesha 'lord of the Earth Element' and therefore 'the essence of firmness'; lauding him makes oneself and one's actions more deliberate and likely to succeed (p.293). The lordship is a deity-over-element regency (scope adhidevata: a deity presiding over a tattva).

  • Beyond the symbolic identity (c8), Svoboda makes a causal stability claim: the square's Earth-resonance gives a building stability and 'a square room benefits from the stability of its square, Earthy base'; geometrical regularity 'promotes regularity of prāṇa flow even in the presence of other potentially prāṇa-confusing features.' The square form actively enhances stable Earth-grounded prāṇa-flow.

Notes from other books

  • txt-svoboda-vastuSvoboda gives Earth a real dwelling face that Frawley's medical chapter (where ele-prithvi was a STUB 'subsumed under Water') did not. NOTE Svoboda's pancabhuta dosha-composition makes Earth a CONSTITUENT of kapha (kapha = Water + Earth, PDF p.065) — see the dos-kapha patch and the divergence question vs Frawley, who folded Earth UNDER Water rather than into kapha as a distinct constituent.
  • txt-svoboda-vastuTwo NEW fields on the dwelling-faced ele-prithvi (the pilot gave it solidity/stability + 'most tamasic'). Earth as 'the only element that can partition Space' makes it the architectural agent of LIMITATION — the element through which prakṛti's finitizing nature acts on a space. Pairs with ele-akasha's breath_pole: Earth = expansion/multiplicity terminus, Space = contraction/unity terminus. New fields only.
