Treatment Methods in Astrology

PDF pp. 230-255traditional

Astrology has a technology

Like any science, astrology has both theoretical knowledge and practical application — and its technology is not one of machines but of harnessing our own energies to improve our relationship with the cosmos. It works with factors in the world around us, but it is a spiritual and occult technology rather than a materialistic one, a way of accessing the deeper layers of our nature and dealing with the forces of our subtle environment (AoS ch.13, p230).

Frawley contrasts this with the modern West. Western astrology evolved along intellectual and scientific lines and has been more concerned with theory than practice; it lacks any consistently defined technique for balancing or adjusting planetary influences. Earlier medieval European astrology did have such methods — gems, metals, herbs, and incantations to deal with astrological influences — but these were discarded with the other occult sciences of medieval Europe as "unscientific." The methods are not unscientific, Frawley argues; they simply deal with a more inward domain of nature, and they were better preserved in India, "the land of Yoga, religion and spiritual philosophy," where gems, colors, mantras, deities, and rituals have always been part of the science of consciousness taught in Yoga (AoS ch.13, p230–231). [modern: Frawley]

Most Western astrologers today instead use the tools of modern psychology — largely Jungian-derived forms of analysis, using the birth chart as a key to the unconscious — to help clients arrive at clarity about themselves, usually directing them toward personal or creative fulfillment rather than higher consciousness. Such readings seldom involve conscious methods to improve one's subtle or psychic environment. A typical modern reading may give the client nothing to do about their planetary influences other than to be aware of them, so a client may leave feeling helpless, warned of a danger but given no practical means of averting it (AoS ch.13, p231). [modern: Frawley]

Vedic astrology, by contrast, is as concerned with directing the client how to balance their planetary influences as with informing them what those influences are — this sometimes takes the greater part of a reading. Like a good doctor, the Vedic astrologer is more interested in telling clients what they can do to improve their condition: a prescription, not merely a diagnosis. The true astrologer is "a doctor of the psyche." Its concern is to help us implement a life-regime in harmony with the stars, through the subtle forces around us (gems, colors) and the more internal methods of ritual, mantra, and meditation. If we do not do such things on a daily basis, our study of astrology may not be able to change our lives (AoS ch.13, p232).

Remedial measures: the general principles

Several rules govern which planets to strengthen and how (AoS ch.13, p232–233):

  • The basic rule is simple: strengthen a planet if it is weak. The caution is to be careful strengthening natural malefics (like Saturn) even when weak. It is benefics when weak that are safe to strengthen.
  • We gauge a planet's power both naturally and temporally. Natural benefics are Jupiter, Venus, the Moon when bright, and Mercury when not under malefic aspect. Temporally, benefics are the lords of benefic houses from the Ascendant (First, Fifth, Ninth). So a natural malefic can be strengthened when weak if it is a temporal benefic — like Saturn for a Libra Ascendant, or Mars for Cancer and Leo Ascendants (AoS ch.13, p232–233).
  • Besides weak planets, it is often helpful to strengthen the lords of the Ascendant or the Ninth house even when they are not weak, as they are usually the prime benefics in the chart. Some astrologers strengthen both the weakest and the strongest planet, so long as neither is malefic (AoS ch.13, p233).

These measures do not strictly require a Vedic chart — one can apply them by recognizing the conditions in one's life and character that indicate a weak planet (in India many palmists prescribe them from the hand alone). They can even be applied to a Western chart, provided one has a workable way of judging strength and benefic/malefic nature. But scrutiny is needed: many indications of a weak Sun and a weak Mars are similar (both show low fire and weak will) — the difference being that a weak Sun gives a poor self-image, while a weak Mars gives lack of motivation and poor work ability (AoS ch.13, p233).

Note: a planet is not necessarily weak in all respects. One may have a weak Sun in terms of career — failure to gain independence or recognition — without a weak Sun in terms of health. The indications below are combined for convenience but do not always occur together (AoS ch.13, p234).

Gems, yantras, mantra, and the danger of substances

Using substances (gems, herbs) can be more dangerous than using mantra or meditation. Indeed, we often use mantra and meditation to ward off an over-strong planet (a too-strong Saturn, Rāhu, or Mars) — but we do not strengthen such planets with gems or herbs. It is generally good for everyone to acknowledge and propitiate the planets occasionally through mantra, meditation, or ritual, since we all must work through their forces (AoS ch.13, p233–234).

Yantras (inscribed geometrical designs) are useful like gems but without the side-effects, being — like mantra — of a propitiatory nature; they can be used by everyone (Frawley refers the reader to the following chapter, Part III ch. 5, "Worship and Meditation on the Planets," for yantras and spiritual remedies) (AoS ch.13, p234).

With gems, two factors matter: the quality of the gem (good quality, without flaws), and how we purify and energize it. A gem may strengthen either the higher or the lower influence of its planet depending on how we use it — a Venus gem may merely increase emotional vulnerability, attachment, pleasure, or wealth unless we approach it with spiritual intention, in which case it increases love and creativity. Used wrongly, gems can confuse or disturb us on a subtle astral level, so they should be cleared and empowered with mantras or other spiritual intention (AoS ch.13, p234).

Gems are worn on the finger of their planet: index finger — Jupiter; middle finger — Saturn; ring finger — the Sun; little finger — Mercury. Gems for the other planets are worn on the finger of a planet they are friends with (naturally or temporally). Gems should be set open at the bottom so as to touch the skin (AoS ch.13, p234).

Finally, malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rāhu, Ketu) cause difficulty both when too strong and when too weak; when too strong they weaken other planets, and it is those other planets we strengthen. When we do strengthen a weak malefic, we should strengthen a friendly benefic as well — if we strengthen Saturn, it is good to strengthen Venus or Mercury — to bring out the positive side of the malefic (AoS ch.13, p234–235).

The remainder of the chapter goes planet by planet. For each graha Frawley gives: the signs of a weak planet (psychological and physical), the astrological conditions of weakness, the Ascendants the planet naturally favors, the gem and its substitutes, when not to wear the gem, and the colors, herbs/oils, mantras, deity, yoga, and life-style that strengthen it.

The Sun

Signs of a weak Sun. Lack of self-confidence, self-esteem, self-respect — a general low self-worth; weak will and courage; fear of others; lack of drive and motivation; emotional and material dependence on others (looking to family and friends for one's identity); a poor self-image; difficulty doing things alone; usually little success, or success that does not make one feel good. The person may be sluggish, slow, dull, or lethargic, and the father usually does not have a good fate either. Physically: low energy, pallor, anemia, cold extremities, weak digestion, poor appetite, weak or slow pulse, weak heart, poor circulation, edema and accumulation of water and phlegm, general hypofunction of the organs and nervous system, poor eyesight, arthritis and weak bones, low resistance especially to cold and damp (AoS ch.13, p235).

Astrological factors. A weak Sun is shown by the Sun in its debility (Libra), in an inimical sign (those of Saturn), in difficult houses (Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth), or under malefic aspect (Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu) — Ketu's aspect or close conjunction being particularly difficult. The Sun is usually a benefic for Aries, Leo, Scorpio, and Sagittarius Ascendants; for them these measures enhance its positive qualities (leadership, independence, intelligence, insight) even if it is not weak (AoS ch.13, p235).

Gem. The main gemstone is a ruby, minimum two carats, set in gold of 14 carats or more, worn on the ring finger of the right hand — good quality, flawless, transparent. As a substitute, garnet, at least three carats (preferably five), worn as a large pendant or strand around the neck. Put on first on a Sunday, preferably at sunrise, when the Sun is strong (own sign, exalted, or in Sagittarius) (AoS ch.13, p235–236).

When to be careful. Do not wear a Sun gem with fever, bleeding, ulcers, hypertension, or infectious disease (high Pitta), or with excess ambition, power-seeking, a dominating nature, strong ego, pride, or vanity. Astrologically, be careful when the Sun rules malefic houses (Third, Sixth, Eleventh), or when benefics (Moon, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter) are combust (close conjunction) or in strong opposition to it (AoS ch.13, p236).

Colors. Meditate on the red or gold solar orb residing in the heart. Use light, bright, clear, transparent, warm colors — red, yellow, gold, orange — avoiding dark colors, clouds, grays, and blacks (AoS ch.13, p236).

Herbs. Solar energy is increased by spicy, fiery herbs: cayenne, black pepper, dry ginger, long pepper, cardamom, saffron, calamus, bayberry, cinnamon — specifically the Āyurvedic formula Trikaṭu. Calamus is best for the sāttvic side of solar energy in the mind. Aromatic oils: camphor, cinnamon, eucalyptus, saffron — warm, stimulating oils (AoS ch.13, p236).

Mantras. The Sun has many names (Sūrya, Savitar, Āditya, Ravi, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aryaman, Pūṣan, Indra, Agni). Main name mantra: OM SŪRYĀYA NAMAHA; others, OM SAVITRE NAMAHA, OM ĀDITYĀYA NAMAHA, OM RAVAYE NAMAHA. Main bīja (seed) mantra: OM SUM (pronounced soom). Repeat at least 108 times a week, preferably on a Sunday during the day (dawn, noon, or sunset). Another good seed mantra is RAM (rahm), the name of the avatar Rāma, increasing our connection with the Divine light. OM itself is said in the Vedas and Upaniṣads to be the sound of the Sun, the essence of all vowels (AoS ch.13, p236–237). [classical]

Deities. The Sun relates to the Divine Father — in the Hindu religion Śiva, Mahādeva — but represents the Divine presence generally, so any form one worships may be used. Viṣṇu is also worshipped as the Sun, representing its more immanent or benefic side. The Sun is also the Divine Son: the great avatars are sons of the Sun — Christ (born at the winter solstice, the Sun reborn), Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Buddha (AoS ch.13, p237).

Yoga. Practice meditation and the Yoga of knowledge to connect to the higher Self. Establish a sense of self-identity according to one's inner nature as pure consciousness; discriminate between the lower self and the higher Self; trace the origin of the "I-thought" to the Divine light within the heart (AoS ch.13, p237).

Life-style. Cultivate independence and courage; challenge one's fears; bring light into the dark corners of the mind; learn to appear in public alone and to spend time alone; take more initiative and a leadership role; spend time outdoors in the Sun, sunbathing twenty minutes or more a day; rise early and greet the Sun with prayer or chant at dawn, noon, and sunset (AoS ch.13, p237).

The Moon

Signs of a weak Moon. Ungroundedness, emotional instability, anxiety, inability to relate to others, fear of intimacy, lack of friendliness, weak emotions; lack of self-contentment; difficulty standing the stress and strain of human contact; emotional moodiness, depression, negativity; a cloudy, dull, or disturbed mind. The mother may also suffer or not prosper. Physically: anemia, low body fluids, possible dehydration, lack of body weight, dry skin, constipation, weak lungs and kidneys, difficulty withstanding dryness and heat; for women, infertility and menstrual difficulties (AoS ch.13, p237–238).

Astrological factors. The Moon is weak when waning (especially new); in its fall (Scorpio); aspected by malefics (Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu, Mars); or in difficult houses (Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth). Rāhu's and Saturn's aspects are the most difficult, unless compensated by Jupiter's aspect or Jupiter in an angle from the Moon. The Moon is generally benefic, but specifically so for Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces Ascendants (AoS ch.13, p238).

Gem. Best is a pearl, at least two carats, set in silver, worn on the ring finger of the left (or right) hand — natural pearls preferred; substitutes are cultured pearls or moonstone, larger (three or five carats) or as pendants/strands. Put on first on a Monday when the Moon is waxing (preferably full), in good signs (Taurus, Cancer, Pisces) or friendly signs, not conjunct or strongly aspected by malefics (AoS ch.13, p238).

When to be careful. Do not wear a Moon gem with phlegm, edema, congestion, or overweight (high Kapha), or with strong emotions, sentimentality, greed, attachment, or excess involvement with family or society. Astrologically, when the Moon is a malefic lord (of the Third, Sixth, Eighth — as for Taurus, Aquarius, or Sagittarius Ascendants), it can cause problems even when full (AoS ch.13, p238).

Colors. The best color is white; white shades of other colors (blue, green, pink) help if also somewhat bright. Avoid dark and cloudy colors (especially gray and black), too much red or fiery color, and overly bright or very transparent colors (AoS ch.13, p238–239).

Herbs. Demulcent and tonic herbs: marshmallow, slippery elm, comfrey root, solomon's seal, śatāvarī, white musali, bala, rehmannia — particularly in milk decoctions. Fragrances of white flowers (jasmine, gardenia, lotus, lily) and sandalwood oil, applied to the heart or third eye (AoS ch.13, p239).

Mantras. Main name mantra: OM SOMĀYA NAMAHA; also OM CHANDRĀYA NAMAHA. Seed mantra: SOM (as spelled); CHAM (chum) may be used, as can SHRĪM (shreem), the main mantra of the Goddess. Repeat on Mondays or in the evening, especially around the full Moon (AoS ch.13, p239). [classical]

Deities. The Moon relates to the Goddess, the cosmic feminine, the Divine Mother — Mahādevī, consort of Śiva as Mahāśakti — with many forms: Pārvatī, Lakṣmī, Tārā, Kwan Yin, Isis, the Virgin Mary. Meditate on the Goddess in the heart, within the lunar orb (at the full Moon) or wearing the crescent Moon on her head, especially on the day of the full Moon (AoS ch.13, p239).

Yoga. Lunar energy is increased by devotional practice (Bhakti Yoga) — meditating on a form of the Divine, especially the Goddess; developing peace, faith, receptivity, openness, and surrender to the Divine or truth, applied with openness rather than emotional attachment (AoS ch.13, p239).

Life-style. An atmosphere of peace, faith, devotion, caring, and nurturing increases lunar energy; service work may help. Place oneself in a maternal, supportive environment of family and friends; consider how to help others in a nurturing way; mingle with others and open the heart to a community (AoS ch.13, p239–240).

Mars

Signs of a weak Mars. Mainly lack of energy and motivation and inability to work; difficulty standing up for oneself; fearfulness or domination by others; not knowing how to express anger or see through others' motives; over-passivity, being easily controlled, even physically abused. Physically: weak immune system, low appetite, poor absorption, low body weight, weak muscles, weak liver and small intestine, possible hemorrhoids, tendency to bleeding or injuries with slow healing, possible anemia; for men, lack of sexual vitality (AoS ch.13, p240).

Astrological factors. Mars is weak in its fall (Cancer); when aspected by malefics (Saturn, Rāhu); when combust; and in difficult houses for it (Fifth, Eighth, Ninth, Twelfth). It is generally benefic for Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, and Pisces Ascendants, and usually good for Aries and Scorpio too (AoS ch.13, p240).

Gem. The main gem is red coral, at least three carats, set in silver (or a gold-and-copper combination), worn on the index or ring finger of the right hand. Being common and inexpensive, it needs no substitute, though carnelian can serve (as a large pendant). Pink coral has a more balancing/subduing but less strengthening effect than red. Put on first on a Tuesday when the Moon is waxing, preferably when Mars is in its own sign or exalted, or in friendly (especially Jupiter's) signs (AoS ch.13, p240).

When to be careful. Do not wear a Mars gem with fever, infection, bleeding, ulcers, or excessive sexual drive (high Pitta), or with anger, conflict, argument, a too-willful or impulsive, aggressive, wrathful, or martial disposition. Astrologically, when Mars is a malefic lord (especially for Gemini and Virgo Ascendants), or conjunct benefics we wish to strengthen (Moon, Mercury, Venus); generally avoid Mars gems if Mars is in the Seventh house or strongly placed in angles (AoS ch.13, p240–241).

Colors. Red and fiery colors, but in darker, more opaque hues, and pure or jet black. Avoid dark grays and browns, cool blues and greens, and very transparent bright colors like yellow (AoS ch.13, p241).

Herbs. Most of the Sun's spices (cinnamon, saffron, cayenne, black pepper) work for Mars but combined with tonics (ginseng, astragalus, ashwagandha, guggul, myrrh). Turmeric, garlic, onions, and asafoetida are very good — particularly the Āyurvedic formula Hingāṣṭak. When Mars is strong, use bitter herbs (aloe, gentian, golden seal, echinacea) (AoS ch.13, p241).

Mantras. Name mantra: OM KUJĀYA NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM KUM (u as in "put"). Mars's other names give OM AM / OM ANGĀRAKĀYA NAMAHA and OM MAM / OM MANGALĀYA NAMAHA (mum); also useful is the fire mantra OM RAM (rum). Meditate on this in the solar-plexus / navel chakra (AoS ch.13, p241). [classical]

Deities. Mars relates to the war God, the Divine Warrior — Skanda, Kārttikeya, or Subrahmaṇya, the second son of Śiva and Pārvatī, leader of the heavenly hosts (like the Archangel Michael). The Greek Ares and Roman Mars may also be invoked, though their ancient rituals are no longer available as the Hindu ones are (AoS ch.13, p241).

Yoga. Mars is increased by the Yogas of knowledge and technique — practices developing energy and insight. Mars types like to work on themselves practically, through physical practice or through mental methods like visualization and ritual. On a lower level the martial arts strengthen Mars energy, though they may cater to its negative, power-seeking side (AoS ch.13, p241–242).

Life-style. Learn to be more aggressive, daring, active, expressive, energetic; take up some physical activity and strengthen the body; keep a definite discipline physically, emotionally, and spiritually, pursuing right goals — but applied with intelligence and adaptability, not harshly (AoS ch.13, p242).

Mercury

Signs of a weak Mercury. Lack of intelligence, poor communication skills, speech defects, weak memory, inability to calculate, immaturity, childishness, foolishness, lack of self-control, addictions and dependencies; being slow, dull, daydreaming, or irrational; a mind out of control. Physically: weak nervous system, nerve pain, tremors, anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, dry or itchy skin, hypersensitivity of the senses, nervous indigestion, allergies; weak lungs and heart; easy suffering from pain and anxiety (AoS ch.13, p242).

Astrological factors. Mercury is weakened by malefic aspects (Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu, the Sun, Mars), by its fall (Pisces), and by residence in difficult houses (Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth). It is generally benefic for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius Ascendants (AoS ch.13, p242).

Gem. The main gem is an emerald, at least 1½ carats, set in gold, worn on the middle finger of either hand (sometimes recommended on the little finger, Mercury's own). Substitutes: peridot, jade, green zircon, green tourmaline — as rings at least three carats, as pendants five. Put on first on a Wednesday when the Moon is waxing, preferably when Mercury is strong (friendly sign, own sign, or exalted) (AoS ch.13, p242–243).

When to be careful. Mercury gems are relatively safe and balanced, but have Mercury's Mutable nature, so be careful wearing them with malefics' gems (Saturn, Mars, the Sun), which they may amplify; be careful what influences they may have picked up. Astrologically, when Mercury is a malefic lord (especially for Aries or Scorpio Ascendants), particularly when aligned with Saturn or Rāhu (AoS ch.13, p243).

Colors. Emerald or green; spend time in lush natural settings; sit under a green light. Avoid reds, oranges, and very dark colors. Mercury likes neutral, not-too-strong earth tones — mild greens, blues, grays, browns (AoS ch.13, p243).

Herbs. Nervines: gotu kola, bhṛṅgarāj (eclipta), skullcap, passion flower, betony, jaṭāmāṁsī, zizyphus, chamomile, mint, sage. Basil, especially holy basil (tulsī), is specific for Mercury (Viṣṇu). Good oils: mint, wintergreen, eucalyptus, cedar, thyme, sage (to clear and open the mind), balanced with mind-calming oils — sandalwood, plumeria (frangipani), lotus (AoS ch.13, p243).

Mantras. Name mantra: OM BUDHĀYA NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM BUM (u as in "put"). Very important also is the seed mantra AIM (aym), the mantra of the guru and of Sarasvatī, Goddess of Wisdom. Repeat on Wednesdays (AoS ch.13, p243). [classical]

Deity. Mercury relates to Viṣṇu, who pervades and maintains all the universe, the indwelling cosmic intelligence; to the Divine teacher, the God of wisdom (Hermes or Thoth); and to the Buddha, the enlightened one, the avatar of knowledge, meditation, and compassion — the Divine child, the baby Christ or baby Kṛṣṇa (AoS ch.13, p244).

Yoga. Increased by the Yoga of knowledge, especially teachings emphasizing reason, discrimination, clear expression, and objective perception; it often gives the role of teacher. The practice of mantra helps, as does the study of spiritual philosophies like Vedānta or the learning of Sanskrit (AoS ch.13, p244).

Life-style. Read, study, write, and think more; pursue mathematical and philosophical studies, courses, seminars, school; cultivate awareness of the world and increase powers of communication (perhaps a new language) — yet always preserve time for silence of mind and relaxation in nature. The highest quality of the intellect lies not in organizing our cognition of the outer world but the inner: looking for the light of truth in the indwelling consciousness rather than accepting the senses' view as the real world (AoS ch.13, p244).

Jupiter

Signs of a weak Jupiter. Lack of joy and enthusiasm, weak will, lack of faith; feeling narrow, contracted, and devoid of meaning; pessimism, depression, anxiety, melancholy, moodiness, self-pity; lack of compassion, friendliness, or congeniality; material and financial difficulties; low creative energy. Children may be denied or may suffer, as may the husband in a woman's chart. Physically: poor vitality, weak immune function, low fat or body weight, poor liver and pancreas function, weak absorption, often chronic disease and poor nerve and gland function (AoS ch.13, p244). Frawley notes these resemble the signs of a too strong or malefic Saturn, since the two planets usually operate in opposition (AoS ch.13, p244–245).

Astrological factors. Jupiter is weak in its fall (Capricorn), when aspected by malefics (Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu, Mars), and in difficult houses (Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth). It is generally benefic for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces Ascendants (AoS ch.13, p245).

Gem. The main gem is a yellow sapphire, set in gold, worn on the index finger of the right hand, at least two carats. Yellow topaz is a substitute of almost equal energy; citrine is weaker (worn larger — a five-carat ring, pendant, or strand); yellow zircon may also be used. Put on first on a Thursday, preferably when the Moon is waxing and Jupiter is in its own sign, exalted, or in a friendly sign — best if Jupiter is conjunct or in an angle from the Moon (AoS ch.13, p245).

When to be careful. Jupiter gems are generally the safest and most balanced of all stones, Jupiter being the best benefic. The chief astrological reason not to use them is Jupiter as lord of malefic houses (as for Taurus and Libra Ascendants), unless it is exalted or in its own sign (AoS ch.13, p245).

Colors. Yellow, orange, and gold — clear, bright, transparent colors. Avoid dark colors and strong shades like red, blue, violet, or purple (AoS ch.13, p245).

Herbs. Tonic herbs: ashwagandha, bala, licorice, ginseng, astragalus — especially in milk decoctions, with ghee, or as herbal jellies. Good foods: nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, sesame seeds) and oils (ghee, sesame, almond) (AoS ch.13, p245).

Mantra. Name mantra: OM BṚHASPATAYE NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM BRAHM (bruhm). Also good is SHRĪM (shreem), which increases prosperity, and OM itself, which connects us with the expansive Divine energy (AoS ch.13, p246). [classical]

Deity. Jupiter relates to Bṛhaspati, priest of the Gods, and to Gaṇeśa, the elephant-faced God, first son of Śiva and Pārvatī — so Gaṇeśa mantras like OM GAM GANEŚĀYA NAMAHA are sometimes used for Jupiter. Jupiter is also the king of the Gods and wielder of the thunderbolt — Zeus, Thor, or Indra (AoS ch.13, p246).

Yoga. Jupiter directs us to the spiritual life generally and to a broad, integral path combining knowledge, devotion, practice, and service — the path of Rāja Yoga. Its basic impulse is devotion (faith), from which knowledge develops; it is more concerned with principle and value than form, yet loves ceremony and ritual. It gives enthusiasm, which may be temporary unless fixed to a long-term purpose (AoS ch.13, p246).

Life-style. Be more optimistic, faithful, highly principled or religious; perform rituals and good deeds; be more friendly, sociable, and communicative, but according to higher principles; align with the forces of good; attempt more and have faith in one's will and purpose (AoS ch.13, p246).

Venus

Signs of a weak Venus. Lack of beauty, charm, and grace; lack of taste or refinement; insensitivity; lack of love or affection; a coarse, aggressive, unrefined, or vulgar nature; difficulties in romantic life. For women, low feminine qualities; for men, difficult relationships with women, or the wife may suffer; difficulty expressing feelings. Physically: weak kidneys and reproductive system, infertility, weak bones, low energy, poor immune function, chronic urinary-tract infections, some tendency to bleeding (AoS ch.13, p246–247).

Astrological factors. Venus is weak in its fall (Virgo), when aspected by malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rāhu, Ketu), and in difficult houses (Sixth, Eighth). It is generally benefic for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius Ascendants, particularly Capricorn and Aquarius (AoS ch.13, p247).

Gem. The main gem is a diamond, at least one carat, set in gold or white gold, worn on the middle finger of either hand. Substitutes: clear zircon (at least three carats) or quartz crystal (better as pendants, at least five carats, preferably ten, or in strands). Put on first on a Friday when the Moon is waxing, preferably when Venus is exalted, in its own sign, or in friendly signs (those of Mercury and Saturn), and not within ten degrees of the Sun (AoS ch.13, p247).

When to be careful. Venus gems are relatively safe but can increase sexuality, attachment, and the power of the senses if we are caught in Venus's lower aspect — so strive toward the higher Venus energy of devotion and surrender; do not use them with a high sex drive or strong need for comfort and luxury. Astrologically, when Venus is lord of malefic houses (as for Sagittarius and Pisces Ascendants), or a strongly sensual Venus (in Fixed signs, or aspected by Mars, in the Fifth, Seventh, or Twelfth) (AoS ch.13, p247).

Colors. Venus likes all colors, especially a rainbow-like effect; she prefers pastels, light blues, and pinks. Avoid dark, heavy colors and colors too bright or penetrating; use light, flowery, variegated colors (AoS ch.13, p247).

Herbs. Venus likes all flowers and sweet fragrances — rose, saffron, jasmine, lotus, lily, iris. Other good herbs are tonics: śatāvarī, white musali, āmalakī, aloe gel, rehmannia, dang gui (dang gui / angelica), red raspberry (AoS ch.13, p248).

Mantra. Name mantra: OM ŚUKRĀYA NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM SHUM (u as in "put"). The Goddess mantra SHRĪM (shreem) is also good for her, as is HRĪM (hreem), the mantra of love, beauty, modesty, and opening of the heart (AoS ch.13, p248). [classical]

Deity. Venus is the beautiful, youthful, often erotic form of the Goddess — Lakṣmī, Lalitā, Tripurasundarī, Venus, Aphrodite, Astarte. She should be worshipped on a Friday with flowers, particularly by lakes, streams, or the sea (AoS ch.13, p248).

Yoga. Venus relates to Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of devotion, making us receptive to Divine love, joy, and beauty (as in the stories of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa or Sufi love poetry); it inclines us to chanting, ritual, dance, devotional singing, and visualization, approaching the Divine through a beloved figure, teacher, or deity. Venus can also give occult knowledge or powers (visions, astral travel) but can trap us in the glamour and illusion of the astral plane (AoS ch.13, p248).

Life-style. Adopt a more refined, sensitive, appreciative, and affectionate mode of life; be more creative or artistic and improve one's expression in speech and with the hands; have more beauty and color around oneself. A woman should increase her feminine attributes; a man should give more respect to the women in his life — particularly as the beloved or the muse on an intellectual plane (AoS ch.13, p248).

Saturn

Signs of a weak or deranged Saturn. Lack of calm, agitation, tremors, inability to handle stress, insomnia, ungroundedness; being easily intimidated by strong people or harsh circumstances, weak and vulnerable; lack of practicality and poor perception of reality; suffering from the government or organized institutions; difficulty making money; lack of consistency and poor endurance — quitting easily, with no long-term drive or planning. Physically: weak bones and nerves, poor vitality, weak longevity, constipation and holding in of wastes, possible decay of body tissues, slow healing, poor resistance to infection; in extreme cases epilepsy, paralysis, or cancer (AoS ch.13, p249).

Astrological factors. Saturn is weak in its fall (Aries), when aspected by malefics (Sun, Mars, Rāhu, Ketu), and in difficult houses (Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth). It is generally benefic for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius Ascendants, particularly Taurus and Libra (AoS ch.13, p249).

Gem. The main gem is a blue sapphire, at least two carats, set in gold, worn on the middle finger of either hand. Substitutes: lapis lazuli, malachite, or amethyst (larger, three to five carats, or as pendant/strand). Put on first on a Saturday when the Moon is waxing, when Saturn is benefic and well-placed, preferably aspected by Jupiter — and it is often good to wear an additional gem for a friendly benefic (Venus, Jupiter, or Mercury) with it (AoS ch.13, p249).

When to be careful. Saturn gems should always be worn with care, Saturn being a great malefic — often best to give them a trial run even when all factors look good. Do not use them with too much darkness, selfishness, inertia, possessiveness, coldness, or calculation in the nature, or when one is proud or manipulative. Astrologically, when Saturn is lord of difficult houses (as for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces Ascendants), or conjunct/negatively aspecting benefics (Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury) (AoS ch.13, p249–250).

Colors. Best is dark blue. Brown, gray, and black are good but in excess strengthen Saturn's negative side. Saturn does not like too much color — to strengthen it, avoid bright colors and too much of any color (AoS ch.13, p250).

Herbs. For a weak Saturn: myrrh, frankincense, guggul, ashwagandha, śilājit, harītakī, comfrey root — herbs that strengthen the bones and promote healing. The Āyurvedic formula Triphalā is specific for Saturn, cleansing all wastes and tonifying the deeper tissues. Good aromas: sandalwood, frankincense, cedar, juniper (AoS ch.13, p250).

Mantra. Name mantra: OM ŚANAIŚCARĀYA NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM SHAM (shum). The Vedic peace chant OM ŚĀNTI ŚĀNTI ŚĀNTI is an extended version of this and is also good (AoS ch.13, p250). [classical]

Deity. Saturn relates to the deity of time as Śiva (Kāla) or his consort (Kālī). Worship Śiva in his dark-blue form, chanting OM NAMAHA ŚIVĀYA, or worship Kālī via her mantra KLĪM (kleem). As a dark planet, Saturn's worship often relates to the dark or terrible forms of the Divine. Saturn is the "grandfather spirit," sometimes propitiated by the worship of our ancestors (AoS ch.13, p250).

Yoga. Saturn requires self-discipline, renunciation, surrender, detachment, objectivity, and the doing of good karma — the Yogas of knowledge and service. It is more concerned with practice than theory and, in its higher form, is the silent sage, requiring inaction and letting go. To cleanse a negative Saturn, some karmic expiation may be required — prayer, atonement, pilgrimage, or giving of charity (AoS ch.13, p250–251).

Life-style. When Saturn is weak, cultivate peace, calm, detachment, and equanimity; keep a strict routine and follow an authority or tradition; reduce travel and stimulation of the nerves and senses; avoid strong emotions and situations of stress. Spend time in nature and in positive, nurturing environments; slowing down, quiet, and retreat may help (AoS ch.13, p251).

Rāhu

Signs of a weak or deranged Rāhu. Hypersensitivity, agitation, fear, anxiety, hallucinations, drug-taking, impressionability, moodiness, strange fantasies and imaginations, cloudy perception; not knowing who one really is and being taken over by almost any influence or suggestion, however unrealistic; being unpopular, out of touch with the times, with few friends; a tendency to debase oneself or one's nerves in unwholesome pursuits — generally to dissipate oneself. Physically: weak immune function, easy contraction of contagious diseases, nervousness, tremors, insomnia, pallor, nervous indigestion; a low connection with the physical body, often with loss of control of body functions, possibly developing into nervous and mental disorders (AoS ch.13, p251).

Astrological factors. Rāhu in difficult houses (Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth); the planet ruling Rāhu also weak (in fall, combust, or poorly aspected); malefic aspects to Rāhu (Saturn, Sun, Mars). When Rāhu is in strong houses like the Tenth and its lord is benefic and strong, it can be good to wear gems for Rāhu to increase its positive power to influence society beneficially (AoS ch.13, p251).

Gem. The main gem is a hessonite garnet (Gomedha) — two main varieties, one cinnamon-colored, one golden. Other golden grossularite garnets can substitute; at least three carats, set in gold or silver, worn on the middle finger of either hand (sometimes on the finger of the planet that rules Rāhu). Darker red or opaque garnets should not be used, as they increase Rāhu's negative (eclipse-causing) power. Put on first when the Moon is waxing, on a Saturday or the day of Rāhu's ruling planet, with Rāhu in favorable signs (AoS ch.13, p251–252).

When to be careful. Rāhu gems are relatively safe (except the darker ones). Rāhu is the predominant influence in the materialistic age (the force of Māyā), so its brighter gems help remove its darkening effect. When Rāhu is in Trines or Quadrants placing strong malefic aspects, it may be better not to use them — unless the planet ruling Rāhu is benefic and not ruling malefic houses (AoS ch.13, p252).

Colors. Like those for Jupiter — bright, yellow, gold — but also those for the Sun — red, orange, transparent. These counter Rāhu's eclipse-causing effect and increase its positive power to transmit energies (AoS ch.13, p252).

Herbs. Rāhu is a subtle force, not dealt with on a simple outer level. Aromas for clearing the psychic air: camphor, bayberry, sage, eucalyptus, wintergreen; calming fragrances: sandalwood, lotus, frankincense. Calamus is the best herb for Rāhu (AoS ch.13, p252).

Mantras. Name mantra: OM RAHAVE NAMAHA. Seed mantra: OM RAM (rahm). The Śiva mantra HUM (hoom) is also good, as it destroys illusions and clears the psychic field of negative influences and suggestions (AoS ch.13, p252). [classical]

Deity. The best deity for Rāhu is Durgā, the Goddess as demon-slayer; her mantra is DUM (doom). Also useful is the avatar Rāma, the Divine hero. Durgā clears the mind of illusions and negativity; Rāma similarly destroys the demons of the subconscious (the lower astral). Whenever Rāhu's influence is high, take refuge in the Divine in whatever form is closest to one's heart (AoS ch.13, p252–253).

Yoga. People with a weak Rāhu should avoid Yogas that open up to the astral plane — including visualization, hypnosis, and modern high-tech Yogas (tapes, videos). Devotion / Bhakti Yoga is best, since Rāhu's influence makes discernment and meditation difficult; some form of psychic clearing, expiation, or (in extreme cases) exorcism may help. Ally oneself with a clear tradition and consistent discipline, avoiding wishful thinking, the seeking of experiences, or the developing of occult powers (AoS ch.13, p253).

Life-style. When Rāhu is weak, avoid powerful sensations, mass-media influence, high-tech, drugs, too much sex, excess talking, and too much imagination; avoid everything artificial, from junk food to artificial environments. Cultivate peace, quiet, and rest, and open up to Jupiterian influences (love, faith, compassion); seek a protective, nurturing environment (AoS ch.13, p253).

Ketu

Signs of a weak or deranged Ketu. Lack of insight, poor discrimination, lack of confidence, self-doubt, inability to concentrate; perception poor or overly acute; weak vision; self-destructive tendencies; proneness to violence or injury (as under Mars, but more of a collective nature — when weak, Ketu makes us susceptible to being hurt in wars or mass calamities); feeling constricted, contracted, and lacking freedom; attachment to the past or to lost causes. Physically: weak digestion, poor circulation, ulcers, anemia, chronic bleeding disorders, muscular problems, nervous-system disorders, possibly difficult or mysterious diseases like cancer or paralysis (as under Rāhu) (AoS ch.13, p253).

Astrological factors. When the planet ruling Ketu's sign is weak; when Ketu is in difficult houses (Third, Sixth, Eighth); or when aspected by malefics (Saturn, Mars). When Ketu is strong — with a benefic planet, in its own sign or exalted, or in the Twelfth house unaspected by malefics — gems for Ketu can increase its higher qualities of knowledge, insight, and concentration (AoS ch.13, p253–254).

Gem. The gem is a cat's eye (chrysoberyl family), at least three carats, preferably set in gold, worn generally on the middle finger of the right hand (or, like Rāhu, on the finger of Ketu's ruling planet). Quartz cat's eye can substitute. Put on first on a Saturday or the day of Ketu's ruling planet, when the Moon is waxing, with Ketu in favorable signs (AoS ch.13, p254).

When to be careful. Do not wear with acute bleeding, high fever, headaches, infections, ulcers, or pain in the eyes (generally high Pitta). Astrologically, when Ketu is in conjunction with planets (unless exalted or in their own signs), or when its ruler also rules malefic houses (Sixth, Eleventh) (AoS ch.13, p254).

Colors. Like those of the Sun — bright, fiery, penetrating, transparent: red, orange, yellow. Avoid opaque or whitish-tinged colors and all dark or cloudy colors (AoS ch.13, p254).

Herbs. Ketu, like Rāhu, is subtle. Herbs to increase perception: sage, calamus, bayberry, wild ginger, juniper. Penetrating aromatic oils: camphor, cedar, myrrh, frankincense. Afflictions of a strong Ketu, however, require cooling nervines: gotu kola, bhṛṅgarāj, skullcap, passion flower (AoS ch.13, p254).

Mantra. Name mantra: OM NAMAHA KETAVE. Seed mantra: OM KEM (pronounced like "came") (AoS ch.13, p254). [classical]

Deity. Ketu relates to Rudra, the terrible form of Śiva as God of death and transformation (resembling Pluto, the Greco-Roman God of the dead). Worship of the terrible forms of the Divine helps overcome Ketu's negative influence. Ketu also relates to Brahmā, God of Knowledge — reached once we have seen through Ketu's lower terror, our fear of death (AoS ch.13, p254–255).

Yoga. Ketu is increased by the Yoga of knowledge, the capacity for self-inquiry, much as under the Sun; it causes us to seek to transcend time and the senses. Meditation on death helps develop Ketu's higher Yogic powers (AoS ch.13, p255).

Life-style. Have more confidence in one's thoughts and perceptions; spiritual and occult studies can help, as can learning to control and direct the power of insight — it is often good to study astrology. Best to follow a teacher or tradition; at least keep some discipline in life, developing the will and energy along with compassion and freedom (AoS ch.13, p255).

Note on figures: this chapter (PDF p230–255) prints no diagrams, charts, yantras, or deity plates. The deities of each graha are described in prose only; unlike some chapters of this book, no devotional plate closes it (it ends directly with Ketu's life-style). The yantras and worship images Frawley refers to belong to the following chapter, Part III ch. 5 (AoS ch.13, p234).
